Home Modification and Housing

Home modifications come out of the Capital Support Budget of your Child’s NDIS funding. Collaborate with your occupational therapist early nd obtain quotations for modifications.

If home modifications are needed to adapt your house to make it more accessible for your child, an Occupational Therapist will be able to assess your house and make recommendations as appropriate.

Home Modification

An Occupational Therapist my suggest wider doorways, ramps, accessible bathrooms and hoists. There are also many new developments in smart home technology, including voice-controlled lights, TVs and automatic doors.

This assessment process also forms part of your child’s NDIS Plan.

There are many companies in Western Australia providing home modification. The NDIS website provides a full list of NDIS-registered providers, including Independent Living Centre WA and TADWA.

Housing

For families with high support accommodation needs, NDIS recipients may be able to apply for Specialist Disability Accommodation in their NDIS Plan.  Read more here

Looking to the future, for children moving out of home there are several useful options to explore including the rental market, either privately or through the Housing Authority, who have accessible housing.  It is wise to apply for the waitlist early, once your child is an adult.  Read more here

The National Rental Affordability Scheme is also creating affordable rental properties. Read more here

Home ownership may also be an option.  Keystart offers a Disability Home Loan as part of a shared equity program. Details can be found on the Keystart website here

To enable your child to live independently in their own home, the NDIS can provide supports for daily living, such as personal care or assistance in the home with everyday tasks.

For more information, contact one of our friendly Family Support Officers, all of whom have personal experience of raising a child with additional needs.
