Leah’s Story

Let us introduce you to Leah, a Kalparrin member since 2019. Over the last three years, we’ve gotten to know Leah, her husband Nick and their three daughters very well as we have walked alongside their family through what has been a difficult journey.

Their youngest daughter, Georgie, was born with multiple, critical health conditions including laryngomalacia and a heart condition.

At the time, the family was living in Kununurra but given the complexity of Georgie’s condition, the family were advised by their local hospital to relocate to Perth as they were unable to meet Georgie’s  needs.

The first ten months of Georgie’s life was spent as an inpatient at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH). To help Georgie breathe, she underwent a tracheostomy procedure where she had a small tube inserted into her windpipe. This is when Leah first connected with Kalparrin; she was mentally and emotionally overwhelmed by the nature of Georgie’s condition and high care needs, and the adjustments her family had needed to make.

Our Family Support team were able to step in and offer a range of wrap-around support including information and guidance to help Leah navigate the hospital, health and disability systems as well as peer support and vital connections to other families travelling a similar path.

Our team visited Leah and Georgie regularly on the hospital ward to provide individualised Next Steps consultations to support the various milestones and points of transition in Georgie’s progress. We were especially thrilled to even there to help celebrate Georgie’s first birthday in hospital.

Georgie is now three years old and has had her tracheostomy removed which has meant that Leah’s family have been able to return home to Kununurra.

Kalparrin currently supports over 5,500 families who are raising children, aged between birth and 25 years, who are living with disability, developmental delay, autism, genetic, chronic medical and/or health conditions. We provide peer-to-peer, practical guidance, emotional support, connection to other families and direction to the most appropriate services and supports to help children and young people live their best lives at all ages and stages throughout their development.

With your support, Kalparrin can continue to provide vital services and resources to our members like Leah who are raising a child with disability and/or additional needs.

Kalparrin is a not-for-profit organisation and Western Australia’s oldest and largest member organisation, supporting parents caring for children with a disability, developmental delay, genetic, chronic medical or health condition. Kalparrin is endorsed as a deductible gift  recipient (DGR) under item 1 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.
